The Birth of Jesus
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Shepherds and the Angels
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. - Luke 2: 1-20 (NIV)

Guys! I would like to draw your attention to a fic, and I am bad at writing recs, especially when I really really care about the fic in question, so you will have to bear with me. When I was stressing about getting my drawn_to fic finished in time, I spent a bit of time commiserating with lyo, who was also running late, as we generally bemoaned our fates/stayed up to obscene hours/complained about characters or plot points that we were sick of. I fear I may have gone on at some length about the difficulties of GSF and space and >:| >:| >:|, while lyo was evasive -- though it did not strike me so at that point -- and managed to ward me off with a well-placed "it's Brendon/Spencer :(" (NO OFFENSE, Brendon/Spencer fans. please do not be put off, I love you and I quite frequently enjoy Brendon/Spencer♥). The point of this preamble is to show you (1) what a sneaky sneak lyo is, (2) the expectations I had in my head, and (3) what a darling darling lyo is (gotta love a word that's a verb & a noun).
All We Fear Is All We Can Save Us (Brendon/Ryan, NC-17) was written for ME in the exchange and words cannot express how much I love this fic (I know, I tried). It's post-split fic that centres around Ryan and Brendon falling very deliberately into a D/s relationship, and then not so deliberately into everything else, and it's about sex and the way that changes a person, it's about Ryan and Brendon and how they can shape and change each other in so many ways, it's about rebuilding trust and the ways somebody can belong to you and the ways you can belong to them. It's Ryan&Brendon together in one of my favourite, favourite ways, written so beautifully and so intensely that I read it over the span of several hours, savouring each word, and then returned immediately afterward to read it the whole way through in a big glut. It's also scorchingly hot. I know I'm going to reread it so frequently because it's a Ryan/Brendon relationship centred very firmly in the kinds of things I love about them -- possession, conflict, history -- but also written in an entirely new way. I feel very lucky to have had such a brilliant thing written for me. You should all go read and revel in it, too. ♥
Ahem. Awkward flailing aside, it's Christmas Eve! How exciting! I really love Christmas, though not as fanatically as some people I know (JJJ♥), and this is always a nice time of year. This year we've banished all extended family from our house on Christmas Day, and it'll be the first time since -- probably since my younger brother was born, actually, that we've been just us on Christmas Day. I'm really looking forward to this, though I rather wish I'd managed better presents. /o\ First year of Christmas shopping without a job in quite some time was... challenging. (My dad's present is awesome, though. He's been fighting with me about getting a driver's license for quite some time, to the point of huge, ridiculous screaming fights, because I really don't want to get one -- if you've met me you probably know why, I would crash in seconds, I can't even walk properly -- and, anyway. I made him a card, and on the front it says "I WILL GET MY LICENSE!!!!!" and then inside it says "LOL JK. Merry Christmas." I am the most hilarious person in the world.)
So tomorrow will be a quiet, lovely day, I hope. My sister and I have plans to watch Love Actually, and I am going to finish Great Expectations, which I have been stalled halfway through for a while, even though I love it quite a lot. I just keep getting distracted when I go to pick it up, so Tomorrow Is The Day. Unless I get a really marvellous book for Christmas, I suppose.
On Tumblr someone posted one of my favourite poems and definitely my favourite Christmas poem and reminded me, so here it is. Happy holidays, everyone, whatever you're celebrating. ♥
O fury- bedecked! O glitter-torn! Let the wild wind erect bonbonbonanzas; junipers affect frostyfreeze turbans; iciclestuff adorn all cuckolded creation in a madcap crown of horn! It’s a new day; no scapegrace of a sect tidying up the ashtrays playing Daughter-in-Law Elect; bells! bibelots! popsicle cigars! shatter the glassware! a son born now now while ox and ass and infant lie together as poor creatures will and tears of her exertion still cling in the spent girl’s eye and a great firework in the sky drifts to the western hill.
